Finding the Perfect Arrows for Your Bow
You may have spent a great deal of time choosing the best recurve or compound bow for you but have you considered the kind of arrows to use with it? Picking the right type of arrow is critical for success and should be a good match for your bow and be suitable for how you will be using it. Are you going to be using your bow mostly for target shooting, competitions or hunting? What are the different types of construction materials and which ones are best for you?
Wooden Arrows
Wood, of course, is the traditional material for arrows but now wooden arrows are used only in longbow tournaments and by beginners. They are not usually popular in other circumstances because they don’t give consistent results due to variation in the shape and weight of the arrows. These types of arrows are easily broken and can warp although they are economical and are good for beginners to practise with.
Fiberglass Arrows
Fiberglass arrows are consistent as they are uniformly made, however, they are brittle and easily broken. They are easy to fit to different draw lengths and are suitable for hunting.
Aluminium Arrows
Aluminium arrows are a lot tougher than either fiberglass or wooden arrows. They are manufactured to a good consistency so they are reliable in use. They can be bought in a extensive array of sizes and types so you will be able to find one correct for you and your bow. The reliability of aluminium arrows makes them ideal for competitions and hunting and they are also made with arrowheads that are interchangeable. However they are more costly than fiberglass arrows so, if you are a beginner and tend to lose a lot of arrows, they may not be suitable. Choose a cheaper arrow until you are more proficient!
Carbon Composite Arrows
Serious archers tend to use these types of arrows because they are efficient, durable and high speed. They are made with an aluminium core surrounded by a carbon composite shell and are extremely tough so don’t break easily as fiberglass arrows can do. They are undoubtedly the finest arrows that are available but they are much more expensive so are commonly used only by serious archers.
Other Considerations
Fletches now are generally manufactured from synthetic or plastic material although you can still find traditional feather fletches. Stability is given to the arrow by the fletches during its flight and to boost speed. Experiment with a range of types to see what feels the best for you. The point is also important. An arrow for hunting for instance needs to have a specially made point. Finally, buy a good quiver to protect your arrows and carry spare draw strings with you.
